Project: St Mellons, Cardiff

Located in Cardiff, a housing estate in St Mellons run by the Wales & West housing association was facing issues due to damaged rendering, seeing signs of algae growth and product deterioration. The previous system installed proved unsuitable for the environment as well as damp British weather and was in dire need of repairs. The housing association needed a solution to improve building aesthetics and prevent damp from entering the homes of tenants.
Thermorend was recruited to find a solution to the problem that was both cost effective and ensured that where possible, successful parts of the previous system were not wasted. This process started with algae cleaning to kill, remove the unsightly algae and to understand the true state of the previous system. Once the main problems had been identified, Thermorend was able to repair cracks and faults in the existing render using the Terrix Crack repair system, a unique repair product that avoids stripping off the existing system and wasting the existing render. After this process, the team recoated the buildings using the Terrix Polymer-silicate historical range, which has additional fibres in the product to increase the strength and flexibility of the rendering. Not only has this helped Wales & West realise savings of almost 48% in cost reductions, compared to other solutions but it also makes for more durable results, which is now being seen on the St Mellons properties.
